What is 2FA? Learn about two-factor authentication

What is 2FA?

In recent years, people have become increasingly concerned about account security as cybersecurity threats have risen significantly. 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) has emerged as an optimal solution for securing your accounts.

2FA stands for “Two-Factor Authentication,” which is understood as a security method involving the verification and authentication of the identity of the person logging into an account.

2FA security is ideal for those who own multiple social media accounts or use online services like Google, MSN, Yahoo, Facebook, Instagram, etc. It ensures the highest level of security for these accounts.

The 2FA system has a high level of security, helping users reduce the risk of unauthorized account access. Some accounts that are often targeted by hackers, such as Google accounts, Facebook accounts, and cryptocurrency exchange accounts, can be protected using 2FA.

Advantages of Two-Factor Authentication

2FA is a secure method for protecting user accounts with multiple layers of professional security. As a result, logging in takes more time and involves various authentication methods. This makes the account safer and minimizes the risk of account theft.

2FA Security Methods

2FA applies multiple security methods to enhance safety in each login or transaction process. These methods include:

  1. Authentication via SMS:
When you log into an application, the system sends a verification code to the registered phone number. Additionally, some services use phone calls to provide the verification code.
  2. Generating Verification Codes through Other Applications:
To use this method, you need to install an application that automatically generates a verification code randomly. This code is valid for about 30 seconds to 1 minute before a new code is generated. Some banks in Vietnam also use random code generators, sent along with the customer’s credit card.
  3. Using Security Keys:
Devices with password locks for logging in can connect via USB to a computer. During login, plugging in the security key completes all the authentication procedures.
  4. Using Recovery Codes:
In case the phone or USB used for account verification is lost, the account is locked, or a hacker changes account information, Recovery Codes can quickly restore access. If the Recovery Code is created first, the user is automatically recognized as the account owner. The best practice is to generate a Recovery Code and print or write it down in case of account issues.

When Should You Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?

If the account is not very important to you and losing it doesn’t matter because you can simply create a new one, then 2FA may not be necessary. However, for important accounts like your email, setting up 2FA is essential. Email accounts are often directly linked to other platforms like e-commerce sites and social media accounts.

To ensure maximum security, set up two-factor authentication for your e-commerce sites and social media accounts. This will create multiple layers of protection, ensuring absolute safety for your accounts in the face of increasing cybersecurity threats.

To date, two-factor authentication is considered the most optimal method that many users choose to protect their accounts. Equip yourself with the best security measures to avoid unwanted incidents like account loss or hacking.
